Equipment

  • Stand mixer with dough hook
  • Large mixing bowl
  • Baking sheet
  • Parchment paper
  • Cheese grater

Ingredients

  • 1 cup whole milk warm, 110°F
  • 1 packet 2 1/4 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1 tbsp granulated sugar
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour spooned and leveled
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 3 tbsp unsalted butter melted and cooled slightly
  • 1.5 cups sharp cheddar cheese freshly grated, divided

Instructions

  • Add the warm milk to a stand mixer bowl. Sprinkle the yeast and sugar on top and let it sit for 10 minutes. The mixture will become frothy.
  • Add the melted butter, salt, and flour to the mixer bowl.
  • With the dough hook attached, mix the ingredients on low speed for 8 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
  • Shape the dough into a ball and add it to a lightly greased bowl. Tightly cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm area for 1 hour or until the dough has doubled in size.
  • Punch the dough down and divide it into 8 pieces. Roll each piece into a ball and place them on a parchment-lined baking sheet.
  • Press the dough balls down slightly and top each with a generous amount of grated cheese.
  • Let the buns rest for 30 minutes as you preheat the oven to 375°F.
  • Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until the buns are puffy and the cheese is nicely browned. Allow the buns to cool slightly before eating.
