Lemon Sugar Homemade Hand Scrub. I love making my own beauty recipes and here I made for you a super easy recipe for making your own Lemon Sugar Hand Scrub using all natural ingredients. Great DIY Gift Idea!

I don’t know about you guys, but between wet felting and taking care of alpacas and chickens, my hands take a beating in the winter. Dry, cracked skin is not fun so I thought I’d share my favorite homemade hand scrub recipe.

Not only does this hand scrub exfoliate your skin, it nourishes and softens it at the same time. If you have chronic dry skin (like my hubby), try scrubbing your hands with the sugar scrub at bedtime and wear soft gloves overnight.

Supplies for making your own sugar scrubs

Mixing Your Homemade Hand Scrub:

This scrub recipe really doesn’t get any easier. All you need is one bowl and some spoons.

In a bowl, mix together 2 1/2 cups of white sugar, 2/3 cup oil, 2 Tablespoons lemon juice and 1 Tablespoon lemon extract or essential oil. Stir it all up. If the sugar scrub is too dry for you, go ahead and add a bit more oil. If the scrub is too wet, add some more of the sugar.

Finish Your Sugar Scrub:

When your scrub has the right consistency, all you have to do is spoon it into your mason jar or other sealable container and add a pretty ribbon.

These homemade hand scrubs make wonderful DIY gifts for Christmas, Mother’s Day or Birthdays. Anybody that works outside will appreciate a good hand scrub and love you forever. Know any Gardeners or Construction Workers?

  1. My favorite scrub uses a base if honey and poppy seeds. You can add essential oils or other oils to it, but just those two ingredients are amazing for your skin. I use it on my face!

  2. What a great gift idea! I think I might save this and make this for my mom for mothers day!! I bet it smells delightful!

  3. This happens to me also.. my hands are terrible in the winter.. i am going to make a batch and try it out..

  4. I always wondered how they made those sugar scrubs. Now that I know, I need to make up a large batch and share it with my family.

  5. My, my… that scrub looks good enough to eat. πŸ˜‰ Happy Valentine’s Day

  6. I am hosting a babyshower in April and this is EXACTLY the type of party favor I am looking to make! Thanks for the idea and easy instructions. I plan on getting cheap little latch-top jars at Michaels πŸ™‚

  7. Someone mentioned this as a shower gift. Awesome idea! And I’ll bet this smells really fresh as well.

  8. I have everything on hand to make this. I have to try it.

  9. This sounds so easy and wonderful! I pinned it to save for later because I really want to try it out myself. Thanks!

  10. Thanks for sharing! My hands are not really a problem for me, its my feet that gets really dry and cracked. I don’t know if its because of my diabetes that’s causing the dryness or what, but I will definitely give your lemon sugar scrub a try.

  11. This is such a great gift idea and I cannot wait to try it! I had a guy shake my hand at a party once and say to me that my hands were “rough”. LOL! Even though I wanted to smack him, I had to agree. Washing dishes, cleaning and just doing every day things cause our hands to take such a beating. I’m dying for some soft hands! LOL! Thank so much for this!

  12. What a cute, easy gift! I’m definitely going to round up these supplies and make some for myself and some friends. I love fragrances that are citrusy and non-floral, so this scrub is perfect for me!

    • Me too Natalie, I much prefer citrus to floral. This will work great with orange or even grapefruit essential oil.

  13. Fun idea, great photos, easy instructions … Love this! Can’t wait to check out the rest of your blog!

  14. Am I crazy or does that also sound delicious? πŸ˜› Maybe I need to eat something. . .

I’ll have to try it out!

  15. I am so going to give this a try. Not only for my hands but my feet as well. It’s going right on my Pinterest now.

  16. My daughter made me some hand scrub for Christmas – Smelled so good! I’ll need to share this recipe with her. Thanks.

  17. I am so going to try this out. I hate using lotions because of the “greasy” feel they leave behind (even the non-greasy ones), so I have just been putting up with dry hand. Now, will it work on feet?

  18. My daughter has made me some sugar scrubs. The lemon one sounds wonderful. I love how it makes my skin feel after a shower with a sugar scrub.

  19. This time of year – the hands in our house definitely need some extra loving…. this is a great way to show them the love, without breaking the budget! Thanks for posting!

  20. Great and simple recipe – I love a lavender scrub, lemon would be nice to have in the kitchen!

  21. Surprisingly I have ALL the ingredients on hand. I’m so making this recipe, this weekend! I love sugar scrubs but hate the price tag of them in stores. Thank you for sharing this!

    • That’s what I like about it….I usually have all the ingredients. And it’s all natural unlike what you get at the store.

  22. I had NO idea it was so easy to make sugar scrub!!! I actually have a salt-based scrub in my house currently from Lush Cosmetics, and it was so pricey (I think the small container that’s about 1 cup was $30). My hands occasionally get dry, but it’s nothing compared to my husband who works with his hands constantly. I will have to make this for him, and make it for a few of my friends as a gift, too! Thank you for the wonderful DIY! I’m so excited to try this! I’m going to check out the brown sugar vanilla body scrub you mentioned, too! It sounds divine!

    • I’m so glad! My hubby and daughter both have extremely dry hands. They crack in the winter, but this helps a lot. By the way, I posted the brown sugar scrub yesterday

  23. I just love DIY sugar scrubs – they are so easy and inexpensive to make, not to mention there’s a million varieties depending on what you like! And lemon has great antiseptic properties, so it is perfect for hands to keep them clean without harsh chemicals. Thanks for sharing!

  24. I love making scrubs, but I have never tried making a lemon one before. I just might do that this weekend! πŸ™‚

  25. My son made something almost like this for mother’s day at school. It was a wonderful surprise and a great idea… this might work as well.

  26. Ooh, I bet this smells delicious! I love lemon. Stopping by from Blogelina Commentathon

  27. I love a great scrub. I can’t wait to try this one. Thanks for sharing.

  28. I love homemade beauty products. I remember when I was younger buying a book all about DIY beauty/ bath/ spa ideas. Since then, I always try to make my own (but inevitably not as often as I’d like). I’ll be adding this to my to try list. πŸ™‚ This time of year is tough on our skin, and anything that can help- especially chemical free- is a winner in my books!

    • I bet I have the same book! Some of those recipes call for weird, hard-to-find ingredients, though. I like to keep it simple πŸ™‚

  29. Love the smell of lemon! This would really make a great gift for Christmas.

  30. My daughter made us girls all some sugar scrub for Christmas. It is really nice to use. I Pinned this to my DIY board and will tell my daughter about your recipe!

  31. I can’t wait to make this for myself! Thank you so much for sharing, it sounds amazing! I’m pinning for later. πŸ™‚

  32. My hands are in terrible shape this winter. I’ve been looking for something new to try on them and this looks like it just might be the answer. Thank you so much for sharing this post! πŸ˜€

  33. I had no idea making scrubs were so easy–apart from being awesome to use personally, this is a great gift idea.
I really love how you did this–especially considering many of these ingredients are things that we all have in our home–thank you for using this as your link up post.

  34. My husband has horrible chapped hands this winter, and I don’t know what to tell him. We use Burt’s bee’s creams, but I’m going to have him try this.

  35. Does the lemon juice sting? I have cracks on my hands from the winter weather and would worry that the lemon would sting. I know when I cook with lemon and have cracks on my hands it does sting.

    • Hi Faith, Yes it would sting. You could try a non-acidic essential oil like Lavender instead of the lemon

  36. What a great idea! I could use this right NOW! My hands are suffering from the winter and need a break.

  37. Yum! I bet it smells devine ~ I think I’d want to eat it!

  38. I live in Minnesota and it’s cold almost year round. I could use something like this to beat dry skin.

  39. This sounds so simple! I love the smell of lemon.

  40. This sounds wonderful. I will have to give this a try.

  41. Thanks for this! I always wanted to make my own scrub! πŸ™‚

  42. MMM i have always wanted to make my own scrub and you make it look so simple, definitely added to yumprint!

  43. I think I want to eat it, too. LOL.
What other sugars have you done?

  44. I need to make some of this for my hubby. His job always dries out his hands and make them crack.

  45. Do you have other recipes?
I would love to see something with eucalyptus.

  46. I can just smell that fresh lemon through the screen. What an easy useful recipe. Thank you for sharing.
