Hi, my name is Dave Meichtry from Chico CA. This month Chico has their Open Art Studio tours which my wife and daughter are participating in. My wife has made numerous small yarn art weaved rectangles.
My question is if one wanted to dye a message on these small approx 5 in by 8 inch weave piece of yarn, how could that be done. For people who purchase a piece to be able to put on a kind, inspiring message could provide a person something soft with a personalized message to help them with inner peace.
That’s it.
Enjoy your day.
Hi Dave!
That’s a very good question. There are a few things to consider … what kind of yarn was used (protein or cellulose) tells you which type of dye is needed as well as any pre-soak i.e. soda ash etc. Also, how tightly are the pieces woven? It would be difficult to make a legible statement on a loose weave.
You could potentially use dye powder with only enough water to make it flow. Put that in a squeeze bottle and write on a dry woven piece. Or you might have better luck with a fabric marker that you should be able to find at any craft or fabric store.
I’m interested to see how this turns out. Please let me know how it goes!
Thanks 🙂
