Don’t throw out your old T Shirts! Dye, Paint or Upcycle them into something new with these fun DIY T Shirt Crafts Ideas
Who doesn’t love a great T shirt? Do you have that one awesome shirt hanging in your closet that you reach for all the time? I know I do. Actually, some of my favorite tees are my hubby’s shirts … nice and soft and comfy!
But, there is such a thing as too many t shirts in your closet. These days there are new t shirts made for every single event, club and charity which is great but let’s face it, nobody wants your old Shift Manager of May 2010 t shirt, right?
So, what can you do with that closet full of old, still useful shirts? Here are 17 cool ideas so grab your Fabric Scissors, Markers and Tie Dye Kits!
Can’t I just Donate my Old T Shirts?
Yes, absolutely! Honestly, I used to haul them all off to some thrift shop like Goodwill. But, then I learned that about half of the old clothing taken to thrift shops ends up in a landfill.
Thrift shops and charity organizations are given so many clothes and other household goods that they just can’t sell it all fast enough. Decluttering and minimalism are the new trend, apparently.
Hey, I just finished How to Make Tshirt Yarn and here is a tutorial which shows you How to Join TShirt Yarn and Denim Yarn.
But maybe somebody needs my old T Shirt
Yeah, I used to feel guilty cutting up a perfectly good shirt or pair of jeans. Someone can still use that item, right? But, if you’ve been to a Goodwill store lately, you’ve seen just how many great t shirts they already have.
Nobody really needs mine… or yours. They get enough. Especially, if we can upcycle or repurpose it into something that will be useful and probably last for a very long time.
Update: I first created this article about what to do with old t shirts years ago. Regrettably, some of the crafts you see in the images are no longer available.
Fortunately, though, I was able to find some other fun t shirt crafts to take their place.

Useful Supplies for T Shirt Crafts
Finally, here is my fun collection of tee shirt craft projects you can do with old or even new t shirts. The jersey knit fabric that tees are made of makes them perfect for upcycling and repurposing into diy skirts, tights or tank tops.
Furthermore, you can braid them, dye them, tie dye them or paint them! Plus, if you’re interested in more than just t shirt crafts, here are some fun Scrap Fabric Projects and Crafts with Burlap Fabric you may like.

Can You Use Paint on a Shirt?
Yes, you can use paint on a shirt but make sure it’s fabric paint. Regular paint such as acrylic craft paint is too stiff when it dries. For fabric, you want to use paint that stays pliable.
